Default Official Winter Storage Post

Being that winter is just around the corner I thought I would be proactive and start a post on things to do for your winter storage. Some of the things I go through are:

1. Wash and wax exterior
2. Clean interior and apply ample amount of leather conditioner.
3. Treat seals and rubber trim
4. Remove aftermarket wheels (apply wax for storage) and reinstall stock, add air to 40-45 psi
5. Change oil
6. Stabil in the fuel tank
7. Trickle charger
8. Remove it from auto insurance..the extra money goes into my mod fund.
9. Check all fluids and fill to capacity..
10. I have leather interior so I use some sort of anti moisture product to protect the interior. I used to throw two anti-moisture desiccant packs in the interior but Griots has a new product which I just ordered if anyone is interested. http://www.griotsgarage.com/search.jsp?searchtext=47211. I was also informed that cedar planks absorb moisture and prevents odor but have never tried it.
11. Apply breathable car cover

Any other tips would be appreciated…

Agree with all except the remove from ins statement. What about vandalism, inclement weather, etc.??? Or does your home policy cover that?

I use Allstate, and they have an "in the garage" policy exclusion that covers vandalism, fire, theft, etc. whether in my own garage or at a storage facility. However, I would not be covered if I drove the vehicles on the public roads.

Moving both my PCars to "in the garage" status lowers my insurance bills $110/mo for the winter months. Not bad...

I put a pie tin filled with charcoal on the floor...absorbs humidity I am told.....if not, you can have a wiener roast in the spring.

Seems like a lot of work. Just keep driving it (after you put the snows on)

Do you have to submit your plates to DMV when you cancel your insirance? I was going to cancel my ins for the winter, but I have to send my plates to DMV and then register and have the car inspected again come spring. At least that's the law in NY.

Make sure the gas tank is filled completely to the top.
Make sure to overinflate the tires and/or TireCradles
Make sure to NOT start the car until spring is here
Move the windows down a bit to help the window seals a bit.
When spring does arrive, remove the fuse for the fuel pump, crank the engine a few times until full oil pressure is present, re-install the fuse and start normally.

Here's a link to a NER PCA article on the subject.

All of the above, then go to Naples (FL) for the winter! and drive wife's 91 Cab which is stored for the summer. (btw, if you have a Cab, store with the soft top up)

Summer storage = keep in a/c garage and have a buddy drive it 5 miles once a week

Let me clarify... I have three cars: GT3, 911 Speedster, and BMW X3. I use Allstate, and during the summer months I pay $221/month for insurance on all of the cars. When the winter arrives (this past week, fwiw), I simply call up Allstate and tell them that my 2 Pcars are now in the garage for the winter. From that date forward, I am paying $106/mo for full insurance on the X3 AND vandalism, theft & fire for the garaged GT3 and Speedster. Come April, I will call up Allstate again and put the GT3 & Speedster back on full insurance. I have been doing this with Allstate since 1993, and have never been asked for any "proof".... Let me add that this has worked with Allstate over the years in Connecticut, Maryland, California, and now Utah...

Does that help?

My HO policy wouldn’t cover any damages due to vandalism, inclement weather, etc.. I have been fortunate enough not to have encountered any issues to date. This is due to living in a cul-de-sac and neighborhood where I feel very safe. I keep the P-car locked up in my garage away of harms danger.

Don..some day.
Ilko..as long as my car is registered (not insured), there is no need to return the plates in NJ.

well, just my opinion..
here in italy it snows (and a lot) in a lot of places... and...
i never heard such a big trouble for the car.

winter tires and simple check for the "anti-freeze" liquid will be the only thing
me and lot of people i know will do, withouth making my brain burning with so many thoughts...

ciao

I would add a number 12. Put in car jacket. This will keep out unwanted varmints.
