After driving a 997 GT3, I notice that the shifting seems a lot smoother over a comparable 996 GT3. After going through all the PET info, most of the parts between the 2 cars are the same (shift arms, forks, gears, synchros, cables, etc). One obvious difference in the parts was the shifter itself. So I got a 997 GT3 shifter and will be installing it in a 996 GT3 to see if there is any difference. Not sure and kind of doubt it, but a cheap test. As you can see though, it is a lot different. Not as cheap looking at the 996 equivalent. I'll report back any findings...

Construction looks more solid. So, according to your PET, the factory is still using the same old plastic linkage at the base of the shifter to connect to the shift cables?

on a relatively small production run such as the GT3 is, is it really that much more expensive to make the thing out of alloy?!?! things like this irk me no end.

Just finished installing my B&M short shifter & EVO Shift Link bought from Eric/bumperplugs.com.

There was the same setup in the C4 I just sold so the new to me TT was not going to last long without one. It takes the very ordinary shifting transmission and transforms it into a precise superb feeling shifting setup.

The instructions were clear and precise took max 2 hours and the next one could be easily done in an hour at a relaxed pace.

Thank You Eric for the best priced (I could find) new B&M Short Shifter and EVO shift link I had found and a great product.

GLH -- That is interesting. I have heard both good and bad about hte B&M... A friend of mine installed the B&M in his GT3 and I drove it, I thought it was horrible. Really tight and notchy...I hated it. It is strange how some love it and some hate it...I wonder if it is an install issue or something? Hmm.

There should be no problem fitting a 997 shifter to a 996 GT3.
My friend just fitted one on his 2004 GT3.

i hate B&M shifter on p cars. shorter isn't always better.
i dont know what PAG did differently but 997gt3 shifter is the BEST feeling shifter PAG ever made. it is totally different than 996gt3, i am not just talking about shorter throw, the feel is different. i would go as far as to call it as the german version of s2000 shifter.

I ripped mine out (SSK) after 1 track weekend. Not too bad on the street but HORRIBLE on the track.

My 2003 GT2 has a B&M SSK unit that I find notchy. I really liked the smooth, snicky feel of my previous GT3. If the 997 GT3 shifter is even better, I'd consider using it in my GT2. Can you tell me if it would be a direct replacement? If so, whats the best source and part number? Thanks for any info.

Adam Green is doing the same, that is, attempting to install a 997 GT3 kit in his 996 GT3. I'm waiting on feedback on either install to decide which to put into my '04 to replace the B&M kit in there now. (Anyone want to buy a B&M kit?)
