Cool Weight loss

After a little hiatus from DIY's (with a recent cross-country move), I am back in the mod. business.

While I wait for my SPG/XL seats to arrive, I put in a little quality time to remove some weight from my porky 3290 lbs car.

I pulled out the 18 lbs of sound insulation from below the driver and passenger footwells and installed some of the Rennlist track mats (full race version). I aimed for a bit of a "stealth" install as, with the floor mats in place, it all looks stock.

The glue came off pretty easily with low-odour varsol and the anti-slip strips are stick on ones from the local hardware store. Now I just have to come up with something to protect that wire bundle at the passenger's feet.

Looks really good! Where do you buy the Rennlist track mats? does the kit include the floor bracket on the driver side?

Nice idea . And I'm glad to see that mine is not the only one that looks a mess when you lift the carpets!

Nicely done! I just purchased and intalled the Rennline pedals, and am now considering the track mats.
Looks great!

Looks great Marc. I can't believe there's 18 pounds of that stuff down there. How about a pic with the regular mats in? What do the track mats bolt to?

Thanks!

The track mats are from Rennline available here -- the full race version, not the others. The bracket is supplied along with ss mounting hardware with the mats (no affil.).

That was a rough number from last year - on my way to the track I stopped at a road-side truck weigh station. That was with a full tank but I tried to subtract off the weight shown my weight as well as the weight off all the gear I was carrying.....seems heavy to me but it is the only number I have. So that number is full tank w/o me in it.

I'll try to snap a pic. tonight and post it. The mats bolt to the little bracket that is installed on the driver's side (drill holes through the floor pan and use the supplied ss bolts and nylock nuts) as well as screw to the floor structural members at your feet (ridges in floor) using machine screws. The inner screw on the passenger's side actually is mounted to a small rubber bumper that just sits on the floor but the install seems very solid.

Keep it up Marc. My porker is down to 2450 lbs and only has about 350 more to lose. (Can a Turtle be a porker too?)

Wow Tom, 350lbs to go?! That's gotta be expensive to get a 964 to 2100 lbs!!!
My C4 Widebody has an off-track weight requirement of 3106lbs - means the weight after the race with me in the car (and however much gas and oil is left). I was at 3170 last race, so I am glad I'm pretty much there... saves me the $$ not looking for more weight loss options!

Unfortunately weight loss to get below 2800 lbs gets expensive (especially if you don't have the time to do the work yourself). My race class permits 2300 lbs off the track weight at the end of a race, so I'd like to get to about 2100 lbs. Geoffrey has shown it can be done, it just takes significant effort (strip the car to the tub and rebuild). It's a path I'm considering - I just don't like to think about what it will cost.

I think I'm the poster child for why to never build your own car, buy one that's already been built. And if you are crazy enough to build it, do it in one shot and not piecemeal over a few years.

Well, somebody's got to build the race car... otherwise there wouldn't be any!!! There's something to be said for feeling the different changes as the car progresses...

Garrett: Yes, it is nice to feel the difference it makes after you pull 200 lbs out of the car or invest in an all mono-ball suspension. It just isn't so nice to feel the pain in the wallet that goes with it. (Ya, I know, I bitch and moan, but I still do what I council others not to do or think about more before they do it. I think there might be a 12-step program for this addiction, but I'm not interested in it, I'm having way too much fun with it).

Well I guess I have a little way to go -- the removal of stock electric seats (with heat) should make a big difference.
