Default Altamont AutoX......report & photos!!

Well I has to leave the auto-X early to go to work :>( So here is my 1/2 day report.....

I got 4 runs in before lunch...steadily improving my times to a best of 49.335 which is not very good...but I was glad to drop my time by over 3 seconds....bummer is it was not good enough to be the top Norcal928er of the day...that honor went to JoeD in his supercharged GTS with a low 43.?? That thing is a beast...I could hear it ripping up the track when I was waiting to stage!

It was great to see 4 928's out there...me-Gerry-JoeD-85S guy I didn't know, he stole the "928" number too! Nice guy though....the course was pretty 928 friendly with some decent straights....I would top out 1st gear and get a little into 2nd..so maybe 70-75mph tops......on this track the 2.20 was pretty good.....I did have some serious wheelspin problems, due to my open diff...but a bit easy on the BWAAAAH pedal fixed that!

I'm just glad I didn't hit any cones!

We had a great time! Even with Gerry getting a DNF and Sara getting a DNS. We made it home and are researching the DNF.

Thankls to Charlie and Brian for all their help!

Also, thank goodness the weather held out and it was not too hot.

That's great seeing a 928 on the autocross course.
Sounds like a fun time.
We've run ours and the right choice of tires can make a big difference.

Yup. Had a great time. Spoiled only by Gerry breaking down.
Sara came up with a nice lunch so that was pretty cool.
I admit I felt like a red headed stepchild driving my 1/2 a 928, but that was compensated for with a 48.5 time. I guess I should have placed a few more bets.
Watching, and listening, to Joe run his GT was a real treat. He put a spanking on the GT3's.

This is true.....Charley and his 1/2 928 did beat me & Gerry by a healthy margin....so I concede that I owe Charley a

However
Our PCA Region president in his bone stock automatic 968 with all season tires ran a 48.0? So he took the award for top 1/2 928 time award....so I guess I owe him a too

Interesting to see you guys out there with stock rims. Is the gold one a Weisach, and the white an OB?

Looks like a good time. Congrats!

The gold one was an 85 5 speed with stock "platinum" wheels......Gerrys is a 78 with "S" spoiler and stock 16" phone dials...... The 85 was moving pretty good, but did lock it up and eat a few cones too....I was very confident with my conti sport contact II's 235/40-18 and 265/40 18's...LOTs of grip and it turned in really well...but the fronts paid the price and got worn pretty bad

Since autocrosses are SO short...running stock rims doesn't really hurt since the brakes never really have time to heat up in less than a minute before cool down.....& the lightweight forged rims are plenty strong too.....hmm 4 S4 rears all the way around with 245/45 16 Hoosiers A6's.....light with great grip for autocross!

What fun! I managed a 42.7 on street tires.

42.7 is a very good time.....since the much smaller 911's have an advantage.....it was fun watching you out there.....mostly as an excerise in right foot restraint!!!

<http://zone7.pca.org/index.php?page=axsingleres&which=AX200704class>

Hey Brian, the results are in. I ended up with a 48.143 and still didn't win AX16. Paul won two classes higher, AX14, with a 48.790.
Joe's 42.7 puts him about 7th over all. That's probably TTOD for street tires.

Do you guys ever have that noob show up who thinks the point is to play live action pac-man with the cones?

Are they always Honda drivers where you live?

This was a PCA AX, but I have run into them at SCCA events. They'd be handy entertainment except everyone has to wait while the course gets put back together. I much prefer the spinners and the occasional dufus who forgets to tighten the lugnuts when he puts his RACE tires on.
