Default Sumitomo HTR ZIII, any good?

Anyone tried these? Test results on Tirerack look really good so I'm contemplating a set. I am going to need two new ones pretty soon but it looks to be the same price for a full set of the Sumis vs. a pair of what's currently on the car. But they are so new that there isn't anyfeedback yet on their site.

2nd question. Optional rear size is 265 but 285 will fit the rims currently on the car. I'm inclined to stay with the 265 since I suspect wear will be more even. Whenever I've gone up in size over stock it seems the tire tends to wear out more in the middle than the edges. Thoughts?

I am running 285's and see no difference in wear from the 265's I was running.

Thanks, what pressure are you running and is your wear fairly even across the tread?

Thumbs up

I am running these on my 1999 996. Much better wear than P-zeros before. 5k miles and they still look new. I use the 996 for daily comute. Lane

Thanks, that's good to hear. A couple of reviews I read of the prior version complained of excessive noise after about 5K miles. How would you rate them for ride and handling so far?

Just noticed this is your first post, welcome! This is a great place for info and help with these terrific cars.

I run them with about 6k miles and they still look new to me. I don't hear them at all but I'm not too picky about that. For the money, adn after seeing what 8k miles does on $300+ rears I am sold! My only comment would be I do notice they break away much easier in the cold (below 40 degrees) but I think this would be the case for most of these tires.

I might try Toyo's for my next set...my neighbor who tracks his M3 and has a f355 runs them on both and has for years.

Wear more in the middle than the edges suggests overinflation rather than a size problem

Chuck has it right; your tire wear in the middle has nothing to do with the size of the tire but is more of an overinflation issue.

i'd get the Fuzion ZRi (made by Bridgestone) before the Sumi. while i haven't driven the HTRz III, i did buy a set of HTRz's. i took them off the car after three days. when i'd turn, the car would lean over on the sidewall and then oscillate back and forth. very scary.

as for the ZRi, i just replaced my Bridgestone RE-01R's with these for the 'off' season. they feel almost the same as the RE-01R with just a bit less grip.

Understand but have been trying to balance recommended pressures vs. too soft and risk of rim damage, what is a safe compromise for the rears?

On my C4S I'm running 35 rear/32 front, however, if it was a C2 that would change.

I'm on the second set of rear HTRZ IIs and they work great for daily driving in FL. Still on the original front tires with 24K miles and they still have lots of tread left. No issue with wet or dry traction for street use. I can't comment on the IIIs but I've been very satisfied with the Sumi brand to this point. Road noise is not an issue. I'm running 40 psi rear and 34 psi front.

This is great to hear. I've got about 4K on the rears and am 110% happy with their performance, and with how inexpensive they are -- my previous rears, T1S's, were awful by the time they wore down close to the wear bars. They seemed to harden significantly as they wore.

How long have you found that the rears lasted? My front T1S's (from the previous owner) are almost shot and I'm going to put HTRZII's on to match the rears.

I replaced the S-03s on my 951 with the ZRi and was really impressed. Great tire for the money.

14K total on a poor alignment after I swapped them half way through their wear life. I had them unmounted from the rims and turned them around to get more life out of the tire. I got a fresh alignment with the second set and wear is MUCH improved.
