Default Re-covering center console

Has anyone re-covered their center console themselves? Not sure if this can even be done. If so, how did you do it? What material did you use?

Thanks!

It can be done.

Thin material (may struggle with leather) but vinyl, alcantera should be fine.

When old covering is removed it does lay flat so perhaps some heat needed to mould the new covering.

Or, paint it like I did

I'm switching from tan to black. Not sure if dying would be an option. Has anyone done this that can provide a picture? Just got a price from Sunset for a new one. $890

some fabric stores in my area carry them... they sell all types of fabrics for clothing, drapes, furniture upholsteries, etc...

I just did the tan/black conversion last week. i bought the carpet set from appbiz.com (no affiliation) and it comes complete with the pre-trim materials for the center console (main big piece, upper shifter housing, and a side cover). after you done with the install, the only thing left tan is the e-brake handle.

Junkart - Did you do the standard carpet kit or the RS carpet? Did you re-cover the rear quarter panels or use carpet? Could you take some pics of the carpet and center console?

Thanks!!!

I just removed the leather and let mine be the flat black color underneath. Sure it's not leather covered anymore, but it looks just fine, and it was free.

Guards red to match the rest of the car and give a bit of colour in the cabin.

If you are thinking of recovering your console, a soft leather will work just fine. Soak the leather in water if it needs to be softend. The most important part is the glue. Get it from an upholstrey shop and not out of a rattle can, a contact cement. All shops have it. As far as Alcantera, I can sell it to you. Be carefull of buying from a fabric store that carries house hold stuff. The home stuff will not have the UV protectants that are needed in an auto. Alcantera is great stuff, it stretches one way well and not at all the other. Also there are two kinds. One is heavier for seats and high traffic, the other is thinner for doors, consoles, etc. easier to work. If you have questions about covering your console or painting it, call me I can help. I own an upholstery shop and do this all the time. 928-453-8140

Thanks for the alcantera info, Mark! That's info I would never had guessed.

Is it a woven-back product, such that applied glue would wick thru?
Or somehow is it truely leather/suede like re its backside & glue/adhesive?

Hi P, Sorry for the late reply... I got the RS kit and it came with the rear quarter panel carpets along with the vinyl pieces that replaces the leather that wraps the door jam around the seat belt area. It also came with a big piece replacement for the rear speaker deck. The kit seriously came complete. It fitted good too! but then again i paid a pro $200 to install it! i noticed he did a little additional trimming here and there to make things fit tight. it came out so sexy!

the only thing with the RS kit is you need to trim/cut off the middle bracket for the rear seats. the pre-cut carpet doesn't have the bulge/hump to cover over it. i didn't have die grinder with me that day so the installer cut a little slot so the bracket can poke thru the carpet.

my car is off site waiting for roll bar at this moment but I can take pix on Saturday if that's not too late? may be i can have my buddy shoot it for me.

Alcantera is a sinthetic or man made material. You can aply glue to it as long as it is not thick. I use a spray gun, paint gun, to apply glue. It goes on even and can be spayed on thin or heavy. You can sray your console heavier, not dripping but a nice good coat and the alcantera lightly. Let the glue get tacky to the touch where it won't come off when you touch it. apply the material carefully and try not to let parts touch that you are not ready to tack down. If it touches it may peel the glue off the console and makebubbles under the material. Alcantera will show an imperfections under it. Make sure it is smooth before wrapping. Good luck. let me know how it goes
