Hey guys, I wouldn't bother posting this here, but I figured some of you might be as interested in the responses as I will be.

My question regards methods of using photoshop to make cars appear to my liking. Lemme explain.

I wanted to: A) get rid of the house in the background B) tint the side marker and foglights, and also the wheels on this picture...



So here's how it came out...



I used a lot of the clone stamp for A), but I'm not too happy with my method for B). Right now I just select the area with the rope, and then use the paintbucket to put black on the selected area a little at a time by setting the opacity to about 20%. The problem is, shiny stuff like the wheels loose their sparkle, they look like they've been primered or something. Is there a better way?

My designer friends at work showed me a little trick. Do what you did with the lasso tool and mask off the area you want to fix. Then instead of using the paintbucket and opacity, go into the menu image/adjust/hue-saturation or color balance and play with the settings until you get what you want. I gave it a quick go here, not sure if it is what you hade in mind, but only took a few minutes.

The way I would do it is,
1) Use polygonal rope select and copy the wheel and put the layer right on top of the original.

2) Use polygonal rope select and select JUST the wheel and then go to filter -&gt; render -&gt; lighting effects.

3) Use an omni or soft omni and if you use white as the light color make the omni range as small as possible in the center of the wheel, bamn now its tinted. Or you could use a light gray or whatever shade you want and do the same thing except make it have a range instead of just the center.

4) You might turn out with a bright spot in the center but you could always have a polished center cap right ...or you could make another layer of JUST the center cap and then do another lighting effect of gray to blend it in.

5) Then erase between the spokes so that the original layer shows up with the brighter brake calipers and such.

6) Same lighting effects with the foglights.

I did it myself and it looks pretty decent, but I don't have a server to upload onto for you guys to see....Hope this helps

Awesome car man, but I must say I like the first picture MUCH better. I never have been a big fan of painted wheels-but, your car is your own. By the way, what kind of wheels are those? They would sure look good on my "S"! Anyway, just my $.02

Thats how I made michelle's purple house green a few posts back. Its quick, easy and comes out sharp.

Thanks for the tip, Hadn't used that command in the image menu, then again I am still a Photoshop rookie. Used it to color the rear wheel and replaced it above. Yeah, real trick is to be good with that mask tool fuzzyness so edges blend nice....

My 15yr old son (Chris Sorbera) that's a genius at photoshop whipped this up in about 10 minutes.
On the wheels, he polygonal lasso'd and then used levels to adjust the color. Background was the clone stamp tool and the side markers was done by using curves.

He also had a prize winning photo on pca.org:
