I thought the Boxster Spyder was going to be hard to get? I was looking at dealers' web sites across the country and almost every dealer is showing 2-4 cars coming in. I realize the car is not a limited production car but gosh the car seems to be available everywhere. I was wondering why I was offered two cars (below MSRP). Is this car really not that special? I'm having second thoughts about buying one.

Cars show up on dealers' website inventories sometime between finish of production and loading onto ships, and stay there until customers drive away from dealerships in the cars. So you are seeing all inbound cars, spoken for and available.

And because of the hold on the cars, you are seeing all cars built from start of US production in February.

Ok, makes sense. BTW I'm hearing 1500 cars for the US.

Considering that there were only ~2,000 Boxsters sold in the US last year, that sounds like a lot. 1,500 for the world is more likely, with the US receiving 30-40%. Which would work out to ~4 per dealer.

I'm curious how accurate the inventory (and in bound) listings really are. The dealership I'm purchasing mine from still shows their original order before they modified it per my request.

The inventory listing is accurate; that is how the car was built. Sounds like the changes were not made.

Don't get me started...after seeing my car in the on-line inventory last week, I have some issues with my dealer as well...

ony 2000 Boxsters last year????? They are obviously going to have to do something, I wonder what the top sales year number was.....I watch the numbers because something quirky happened with my other car....the VW R32....the 2004 model US allotment was 5000 and all 5000 sold, the 2008 model allotment was 5000 however only about 1750 sold....I guess everyone who wanted a car like that had bought theirs in 04'.......My Boxster S and my R32 are both fun cars but in different ways....

1750 R32s - where did you get that from? I don't mean to be rude, but that's totally incorrect; all 5000 of them sold (1 to me, when they were getting very thin on the ground in October 08) - it just took a little longer than with the mark 4, partly because the 08 was sold into the teeth of a recession.

Problem is in this economy buyers are going to see the MSRP for the Spyder and think Heck I am now
just a wad a cash from a 911. I modestly decked out a Spyder and was close to the price I paid for
my 09 Carrera S PDK

... but then you'd have a heavier GT car versus a nimble track car.

I don't think many considering the Spyder are comparing them to CPO 911's.

The Spyder is a cool car no doubt about it, but maybe the group of buyers is smaller than expected. With its manual top, and stripped down/ lightweight build, it may be a bit too hardcore for some buyers. A 997 or even a Boxster S may be a bit more useable for buyers who only occasionally track their cars. On the other hand, the Spyder may not be light enough for dedicated track fans, as its still so much heavier than a Lotus Exige/Elise and its only about 175lbs lighter than a Boxster S (and thats before people start adding A/C, radios, nav systems etc to the Spyder).
