Are the Taycan Selling?
#31
Is it a play to gain share, or are they finding out the market for a $100-200k EV sedan is not mature yet?
Looks like it’s eaten into Panamera sales at the very least.
Me as a potential buyer, I’m seeing significant discounts and a bunch of leftover car on lots. I could care less how many they sell as long as it costs me less to buy one.

^^ that. Demand varies a lot by geo. Overall world wide, Porsche is selling just about every one they can make. But there are definitely US regions where EVs are less popular and the 2020 models were all the most expensive trims. The new base trim will help, but I don’t expect things to really take off until the BEV Macan.

Taycan is eating Panamera’s lunch and sitting across the table smiling and savoring each bite. This will be the last refresh of the Panamera - after that it will go the way of the 914, 928, air cooled 911’s.

Porsche could drive panamera sales to near zero if they simply lowered the price of the Taycan by $10k-15k - but then they would have a supply problem (they can’t make that many)…
I can’t believe there is any disappointment with regards to Taycan sales - and all public notes from Porsche are it’s a successful product. If it wasn’t they would have released the CT version (why throw good money after bad)
Porsche is doing a masterful job IMHO of “transitioning” their product line, but I would not be surprised if even Porsche is a bit taken aback at how quickly their customer base is abandoning the Panamera despite their attempts to have the Taycan be a different class of 4 door sports sedan.

There won't be another Panamera after the 971.2 refresh.

I can also see this - but history with Tesla demonstrates that when a compelling EV is placed in a market segment next to a previously compelling ICE offering the EV “can win” the segment - I believe the writing is on the wall for the panamera - oh there will be some people who “still perfer” it and it won’t go to zero sales, but I can’t believe anyone who drive’s both platforms would then “choose” the panamera over the Taycan unless you have specific needs of the panamera’s benefits (bigger sedan more space) or you really really really need to drive 400 miles in a single shot with with “charging” stops.

The Panamera is a bigger car with noticeably more space in the rear seats. I think that it gets a refresh and is released with an EV or hybrid model next (like the tip of the line currently). Taycan allowed a development chassis without perturbing 911 or Panamera lines during the transition. I see all 3 doing well in the future and using variations of the same powerplant as time goes by.
