When I built my house I had 50 A welder outlet installed. I upgraded the socket to Hubbell for $80. The replacement EV charger was a Juice Box which I got the 30% Federal Tax credit for a net of $437.

I was fortunate enough to plan ahead just before having our current house built. Our electrician thought it was a good idea (we were his first house that knew up front we were going to have an EV), and and thus he threw in the 50A NEMA 14-50 socket and appropriate # 4 copper wiring to it for free. Nice!!!

All we needed was to buy ourJuiceBox 40 and plug it in. Was originally for our RAV4 Plug-In hybrid; now used for our BMW iX M60 — and all EV guests who wish. Between our local utility’s $250 refund check and the Fed $181 tax credit, we were/are out a net of just $164 (USD).

Like others, I changed out the inexpensive NEMA 14-5-0socket for a Hubbell industrial grade.

Will be used for our Taycan when it arrives (and the leased iX departs).

Several factors go into the price. #1 Location of your main panel or appropriately sized subpanel. If its in your garage or right next to it, super easy, low materials costs. Only factor beyond that is your selection of wall charger.

If your panel is lets say in a basement on the opposite side of your home with respect to your garage, and you have a finished basement with no easy ways to run new conduit, then count on it costing several grand. Time and Labor, and materials. Cost of copper wire in the last few years has exploded. If you are going for a setup beyond 60 amps with a very long stretch, it might actually be cheaper to run a 100 amp aluminum service cable and setup a small 100 amp panel in your garage. This will all depend on conduit lengths, cost of permitting etc.

If you are friendly with your electrician and are handy, have the time and equipment but you don't want to mess with panel work etc, you can offer to pull the wires from the panel to the garage, and then your electrician is only really doing hookup work. Most of them hate pulling wires because there are so many factors that can play into how long this could take and can really mess their schedule up. If you do the stuff they don't like and you can do it up to code you can save a bundle that way.

Most important rule of thumb is to go with oversized wires for your desired amperage requirement, as electric cars are a steady state draw.

If you are building a new house and there isn't a panel in the garage make sure to spec it with at least a 100 amp subpanel in the garage. This future proofs you (multiple electric vehicle charging at the same time)

All in with ChargePoint home flex - $2000 in northern VA. Main breaker panel is located in the garage and the home was built in 2004.

Same as @yngexc - ~$2k including equipment (Tesla Universal EVSE) to have install done, which was a breaker on an existing panel, and line drug across an attic to the exterior wall of a garage.

I actually installed two! The first was the Porsche charger which cost me $35. The new one cost a net $91!

So some details, my 200 amp CB panel is in my garage, just 3 feet from the garage door. When I got my Taycan, I wired a 50 amp breaker (~$15) in the panel and used a leftover 6 AGW 4-wire piece which ran out of the bottom of the panel to an adjacent plywood board that was screwed to the wall where I attached a 50 amp 16-4 outlet (~$20), yeah, not a Hubble. I mounted the Porsche controller on the wall then punched a hole thru the wall for the 25' cable. Worked great!....until I got the recall notice. I was just going to wait out the time till the cable becomes available. However, one morning, after an overnight charge, I found that the system, either the controller or the car charger, shut off and a red light was blinking, while the battery was around 70% charged. And, no, the 16-4 recepticle was perfectly fine!

At that point, I decided to take Porsche's offer of up to $600 rebate for an aftermarket controller. I researched various brands, with the help of the forum post herein, and decided on the hardwired version of the ChargePoint Flex, which I got from Amazon for $549 + 6% PA sales tax, ~$582, and delivered in 2 days. I chose the hardwire set-up because it allowed the use of up to an 80 amp breaker, which would allow it to operate at a 50 amp setting. I could also use a 70 amp breaker and still get 50 amps, which is what I chose. For the wire, 6 AGW THHN is rated for 75 amps per the NEC 2020 code. This time, I mounted the controller box outside, a total run of 8'. Cost: ChargePoint Flex = $582 (just waiting for my rebate check, so in reality $0, wire = 3 individual strands 8' long each $33, 70 amp breaker = $33, 3/4" watertight conduit and connectors = $31.

Performance, old vs new
Old 8.2 KWH per the Taycan's screen
New 10 4 KWH, so roughly a 20% faster charge rate.

Now, I have that 50 amp welding recepticle that I always wanted, now, all I need is the welder! Oh yeah... I'm a retired engineer, so $0 installation cost. YMMV and don't do it if you are not totally comfortable working around high voltage or your jurisdiction does not allow it!
