2006 Porsche Cayman S “Street Track” Edition

While I hate to do it, I am selling my 2006 Porsche Cayman S (lets say $35K OBO for now). So many cars to own and so little time. I purchased this vehicle completely stock in November 2011 with 57K miles from a dealer who had the car as a lease return. It has been a steady project car for me ever since as I have tried to include all the most desirable modifications and improvements that my 25 years in the Porsche hobby (obsession is perhaps a better word) could dream up. Alas, it is now “done” as far as I am concerned, and the only next step is to drive and enjoy it forever or start to morph it into a full on “no return” track car (remove interior, full cage, etc.), which I do not need. If you are reading this, you probably already know all about the Cayman S first generation. So let me concentrate on the features in this specific 987, and its history.

To start at the beginning, when I purchased the vehicle I was the second owner. The car had no paint work and all the body parts were original (with the factory VIN stickers on each). There were no non-stock changes to equipment. The condition was very good, with most of the Sand Beige leather interior looking like new and the Cobalt Blue metallic paint bright and glossy. It went from one enclosed garage to another (mine). At the time it had 57K miles on the odometer, and the CarFax information agreed with this value. It has since accumulated less than 20K miles, and has been the beneficiary of factory and aftermarket parts to improve reliability and performance. The clocks say about 70K now.

By now you are probably guessing that I am a crazy auto enthusiast, and indeed I am, and this is one of several cars in the household. In my past I have owned quite a few 911s (early and late), 944s and 951s. “Newer” Porsches are also allowed in the garage, such as a 964 and 993 cab. And even a 914 just to round out the experience. Most of these were street cars, some were dedicated track and racecars. I’ve been a PCA driving instructor since I was 26 years old, and raced Enduro go-karts with WCA, Porsches aplenty in PCA Racing and Formula Continental with SCCA.

Just the typical Rennlister

This vehicle has been treated to the ultimate overkill maintenance schedule, with Mobil One always used. Recent fluid changes for entire car have been performed.

I have all receipts since new (dealer serviced before me), and of course two keyless entry keys. Free and clear title, no surprises with theft, salvage or other issues.

The 987S is Cobalt Blue Metallic with a beautiful Sand Beige Partial Leather Interior. The paint is all original (and showing some wear). There are some paint chips on the front hood as well as some crazing near the crest, and some scratches on the front bumper cover which is getting pretty sandblasted. The rear bumper cover has an almost unnoticeable crease as a result of a parking brake failure (as in failure to use one!) and this was reported as an accident and shows on the CarFax. The plastics for the rear wheel arches (forward) are cracked and should be replaced, I have new parts that will be installed before sale. Other than that, and I am trying to be picky, the paint is quite nice – I have never run this vehicle thru a car wash, in fact no one in the house is allowed to wash it but me! I use Griot’s Garage cleaning products exclusively. The 18” stock S wheels are beautiful, have no curb rash or other cosmetic issues. Tires are practically new street Sumitomos in the stock sizes.

The passenger interior seat is in excellent condition, but the driver seat is showing some wear on the outside bolster. The bolster should be re-dyed. All the leather is fed Lexol regularly. The carpets are in excellent condition, always covered with McNeil floor mats. The door panels are excellent. Dash is perfect. Electrics all work perfectly. Headliner looks perfect. Sport Steering wheel (this is a wonderful wheel) looks great. Rennspeed alloy covers for all the pedals and an aluminum dead pedal is installed. An HIP Clear Engine Cover (I painted the intakes so it looks pretty) is included as well as the stock cover and carpeting.

Airbag light is on, Durametric says the weight sensor on the passenger seat are returning out of range values. I think a PWIS re-calibration is in order.

Toolkit and inflation kit are as new. Front boot carpeting is very nice condition and includes a factory insert to protect it. Horns replaced with mildly louder twin hours that get attention when you need it most.

In stock condition, the car was NEVER driven on the track, by me or the previous owner. Once the engine reliability updates and suspension updates were installed, I have driven the car for 6 days of driver’s education at New Jersey Motorsports Park. It is a very nice track car for a "street car."

In late 2013 @65K miles I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, IMS cover seal and throwout bearing. At that time a WaveTrac Torque Biasing Differential was installed in the stock 6 speed transmission. It works extremely well and made the car much better in slow speed corners.

Suspension upgrades were made starting with GT3 Lower Control Arms on all four corners and adjustable toe links in the rear. This allows for any camber you would like to be dialed in. Right now, that is -2.5 up front and -3.2 in back, which works extremely well on the track but is probably too much for extensive street miles. The wheel carriers have high quality studs installed to simplify wheel and tire changes. GT3 Swaybar up front with Tarett drop links and “quiet” rubber encapsulated heim joints. The rear bar is an H&R with stock links (also quiet).

I had H&R lowering springs on the stock PASM shocks, and that worked pretty well but was not easy to adjust the ride height. I installed a set of new Bilstein PSS10 Damptronic coil over shocks and springs this winter and have only a few hundred miles on them.

Why sell now?

So I’ve been informed by the wife that if I want another Porsche (I have the idea of a 997 Carrera 4S or Twin Turbo for daily driver and occasional track use) that this “two seater garage queen” has to go and the new car has to be a 2+2. So I’d like to trade/sell this car for an interesting late model “2+2” streetable Porsche. Some track mods are fine. 2005 and up 911 variants, 2001 and later Twin Turbo would be good candidates. Yes, I expect in some cases to have to kick in a few bucks also (maybe more than a few)…

A few more questions on track only parts for the car. I do have a set of factory 987S 18" wheels with NT01's mounted (6 track days on them). Also have several sets of Pagid pads, Ti heat blocking plates and other misc spares. These are not included at the above price, but everything is negotiable...
