I normally don't use 6th much, but on a recent 200 mile highway trip, I used it the whole way. I got 28MPG, according to the car's computer. :) So there's one reason to use it.

You're probably hearing the emissions air pump. On cold starts, it injects air into the exhaust stream to reduce emissions. It doesn't pump on warm starts.
