It might be a leaky check valve in the fuel pump, leaky injectors, or a bum accumulator,but none of these would explain the connection between the timing and the starting problem.

If it has the opening rear windows, I managed to push the window lock with wire, get the window open and then use coat hangar wire and a broom handle to get to the door lock button. Worked for me!

You really need to upgrade toa Carrera cooler with fan and over ride switch. That will solve all your problems. What you describe is typical of trombone cars esp. with A/C.
